GECO’S LABOR INITIATIVES

GECO Mechanical & Electrical Limited won the prestigious ‘Taqdeer Award’ in December 2017 which was organized under the patronage of H. H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and the Chairman of the Executive Council. The award recognizes companies that demonstrate excellence in labor relations and employee welfare.

The award was presented by His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid. The occasion was graced by the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Sultan Al Qassimi, son of the Crown Prince of Sharjah, who received the award on GECO’s behalf during the award ceremony held on the 19th of December 2017 at the Dubai World Trade Center.

Altaf Hussain, General Manager, GECO, talks to FM Today about the significance of this award.

Tell us about the Taqdeer award. What were the parameters considered?

Taqdeer Award is a points-based award program for promoting employee welfare. The award acknowledges the companies who demonstrate excellence in labor relations and employee welfare. The award also recognizes and rewards companies that maintain the highest standards in accordance with global benchmarks and best practices.

What is the staff strength of GECO? What kind of profiles do your employees have?

GECO is a major market player in the UAE, and we enjoy a substantial share of the current development projects going on within the country. We have diverse businesses including MEP, Power, Fire Protection and FM. The employees of GECO are foremost its true strength and we believe employees are the biggest assets of any organization. We employ nearly 2,600 employees as of today – our strength has risen by 30% within the last one year. GECO has a team of highly professional and experienced employees who carry decades of industry experience.

What kind of accommodation is provided to your employees?

We have a total of 8 accommodation buildings all over UAE, both owned and rented. All our accommodations include the required amenities with well-equipped rooms, fully furnished kitchens, individual lockers, common areas with large LED TV screens, separate first-aid rooms, shuttle busses from accommodation to Head Office & nearby Clinic facilities, and laundry room with washing machines. We also have a dedicated recreation center for our employees.

Tell us about the training that your staff undergoes. How often do you conduct refresher training?

As a business, we have invested heavily towards the learning & development of our employees. Trainings are delivered either by our in-house training champions or we source external training partners. We also have a corporate learning & development department, which delivers a variety of sessions for us. We have a very unique concept of a mobile classroom - “Learning on Wheels” - an 80 seater bus converted into a 40-seater training room wherein our trainers move from site-to-site delivering short sessions, in the Learning Bus. Recently, we also inaugurated an in-house Technical Training Center completely equipped with actual MEP equipment as well as a dedicated welding training area to provide practical hands-on training experience to our maintenance team.

Above all, our parent company, Albatha Holding hosts an annual learning festival over a period of 3 days for all the employees of our group. During the festival, nearly 150 training sessions are conducted over a 3-day period.

Give us an idea of the various employee welfare strategies that GECO adopts?

Employee welfare and happiness is of extreme importance to us. We undertake various initiatives to ensure that our employees are provided with the best living conditions. We also organize annual health camps in all our accommodation facilities by partnering with different medical service providers. We organize annual picnics for our employees.

Every month, we host a ceremony to award employees who have demonstrated exceptional performance through our monthly recognition program “Employee of the month” and “Supervisor of the Month”.We also provide Suhoor and Iftaar arrangements during the holy month of Ramadan. The arrangement is made for 500 people that include more than 2000 of our employees and the general public.

We recently organized and conducted a sporting event ’Winter Games‘ in our camps, which had a total of 11 sporting activities with participation from nearly 400 employees. GECO also participated in a major leading corporate cricket tournament of UAE hosted by SEWA under the UAE Cricket Council, “Rashid Alleem Premier League” at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. At present, we are the defending champions of the tournament
